“Painted People” and “The Human Tribe," two of Doug's newest series, focus on the innate connections that humans (both as figures and as personalities) have to the spiritual and physical worlds around them.  His incredible technique working with oil pastels involves 'carving' into the surface of layers of material.  This reveals an iridescent play of textures and colors, and marvels the eye. The viewer draws in to enjoy the sensual detail of each piece, best seen in person, while dissolving into the story the figure tells through expression and symbol.  Each piece communicates awe for intricacies in the human experience- ecstasy, pain, and the memory of an ancient past.
